The statement
Zionism is not racism. I call on the Green Party to reverse its “Zionism is Racism” motion.
On 4 October 2026 the Green Party of England and Wales passed a motion declaring that Zionism is racism. It brands the belief of most British Jews as racism. Councillors of every other party are invited to say, in their own name, that it is wrong. Why Zionism is not racism.

Cllr Chris ShentonBushey St James, HertsmereI share your abhorrence at the resolution of the Green Party at their conference and condemn it utterly. Zionism is not racism. I support the 2 state solution in Israel and Palestine in which all people can live in peace.
Cllr Mike SammonCambridge, SeftonAntisemitism sickens me. Zionism is not racism and I would expect every decent Green politician to make that clear. Zack Polanski’s refusal to condemn the Green Party’s motion has been disgraceful.

Cllr Kris BrownGateacre, Liverpool
Cllr Dr Martin CahnHiston & Impington, South CambridgeshireDefining Zionism as racism denies the Jewish people their basic right to self-determination and misrepresents a key part of Jewish identity. Zionism is the same as Polishness or Britishness yet no party would ever vote that either of them means racism.
Cllr Alan LeamanSevenoaks Northern, Sevenoaks
Cllr Roger CrouchIsleworth, HounslowThe motion does nothing to tackle rising antisemitism and Islamophobia in this country. As a Holocaust educator, this scares me.
Cllr Phillip RedshawCouncillor Phillip RedshawLiberal Democrat Details, East Riding of YorkshireYou can stand with Palestinians and fiercely criticise Israel without declaring Zionism inherently racist. By doing so, the Greens risk legitimising antisemitic ideas and discriminatory treatment. The liberal alternative is clear: equal rights, security and self-determination for Jews and Palestinians.
Cllr Christine BrettSeaford South, LewesI support 2 nation states Palestine and Israel and pray that they can live peacefully.

Cllr Luke Cawley-HarrisonCrouch End, Haringey
Cllr Joe OttenDore and Totley, SheffieldIt is sad to see the Green Party taken over by people who don't care for its historic values or for British values of tolerance and respect. I hope we can all work for peace in the region and reject the extremists, like those in the Green Party, who are making excuses for war.
Cllr Andrew VarneyBrislington West, Bristol
Cllr Peter NicholsonHaslemere East, Waverley
Cllr Paul RainbowDurrants, Three Rivers
Cllr Paul MellorDitchling and Westmeston, LewesIt is patently obvious that Zionism and Racism are not the same. Those who campaign for a lasting peace and a two-state solution have my full support.
Cllr Geoff PearlEccleston, St. HelensZionism is not racist. Zionism is the right of Jewish people to live in their on Homeland Israel. I would accuse the Green Party of antisemitism. They have never condemned Hamas of the atrocities they carried out on 7th October 2023 before and since. They have never condemned the atrocities carried out by Palestinians through out the years or their pay to slay policy.
Cllr Yehudi LevineDunkeswell and Otterhead, East Devon
Cllr Paul RichardsBushey North, Hertsmere
Cllr Conrad Hart-BrookeRothwell, Leeds
Cllr Andrew MakinsonAllerton, Liverpool
Cllr Kevin RaeburnLeavesden, Three Rivers
Cllr Dawn GambleVerulam, St Albans
Cllr Glen SafferyWoodside, WatfordThe belief in a Jewish state is clearly not an inherently racist belief. It is an essential component of the two-state solution long supported by the vast majority of the international community, the British Government and my party. I believe the two state solution is the only path to long-term security and dignity for the Israeli and Palestinian people. Regardless of appalling and racist provocations from extreme elements on both sides of this conflict, including members of the current Israeli government, we should reject such sentiments unequivocally.
Cllr Stewart GoltonRothwell, Leeds
Cllr Phil GilchristEastham, Wirral
Cllr Nick da CostaHighgate, Haringey
Cllr Simon MostynMarshalswick West, St AlbansThis is really simple. All Zionism means is the right of the Jewish people who have been subject to blood libels, discrimination, exclusion, expulsion, pogroms and mass murder throughout the centuries to a homeland of their own. The rights of other peoples to a state of their own is not considered racist so there is no rational reason why the right of the Jewish people to a homeland should be treated as such.
Cllr Tony ClaytonSevenoaks Eastern, Sevenoaks
Cllr Rodney BermanPenylan, CardiffThis approach wouldn't help us achieve peace which has to be our ultimate objective. We must continue to strive for a two-state solution.
Cllr Simon CordonClapham Common and Abbeville, LambethI condemn the loss of innocent life in this conflict, including the 1,195 Israelis who died on 7 October and the 73,000 people who have lost their lives in Gaza, including over 20,000 children. I condemn the actions of Hamas and of the current Israeli government. But criticism of a government must not be used to deny the Jewish people the same right to nationhood afforded to others. Zionism is a legitimate belief that Jews are entitled to national self-determination in their historic homeland. Both Palestinians and Jews have a right to live in peace through a negotiated two-state solution.
