Zionism Is Not Racism

About

Who made this site

One British Jew, working alone. No organisation behind it, and no money.

I am a British Jew.

I was born in London, and I now live in the East Midlands.

I have a full-time job, as well as my full-time hobby: fighting antisemitism.

Why I did this

I read the motion on the day it passed. It says that the belief that Jews, like any other people, have the right to self-determination in their historic homeland, a belief around nine in ten British Jews hold, is racism, and it binds a party that wants to govern this country to treat it as it would any other form of racism.

I did not want to argue about it online. I wanted to know, council by council, which of the people who represent us agree with it and which do not, and to make it easy for anyone to ask them. That is all this site does. It asks, and it keeps the answers.

I made this website, and I run it, as an individual. It has no financial backing of any sort.

No organisation is behind it. I have made many Jewish communal organisations aware that I am running it, and asked them to share it.

How it happened

  1. The Green Party of England and Wales passed the motion declaring that "Zionism is racism".

  2. This site went up the same day: one page, asking people to tell the Green Party that Zionism is not racism.

  3. The first Green councillor signed the councillors' pledge.

  4. The first councillor of another party put their name to it: Cllr John Wright, Conservative, Derby.

  5. The first MP put their name to it: Greg Smith MP, Conservative.

  6. The hundredth councillor or MP put their name to it.

  7. All 14 Conservative councillors on Wirral Council put their names to it in one email from their group office, after a group meeting the night before.

  8. 323 councillors and MPs on the record, from 112 councils. This page adds the next milestone by itself.

In their words

The newest of the lines councillors and MPs have put beside their names. Every one is public, with their name, on their own page.

  • “Antisemitism sickens me. Zionism is not racism and I would expect every decent Green politician to make that clear. Zack Polanski’s refusal to condemn the Green Party’s motion has been disgraceful.”

Cllr Mike Sammon, Liberal Democrat, Sefton

  • “Happy to belong to a political party which has dealt with its Antisemitism years ago (with a little help from me, I'm proud to say) and which has condemned the disgraceful Antisemitic Green Party Motion.”

    Cllr Michael Rubinstein, Labour, Bury

  • “I stand with the Jewish community and support the protection of their rights and identity. It is deeply concerning that such a statement is even necessary, and I urge political parties to reflect on the impact their words have on minority communities.”

Cllr Victoria Sena, Conservative, West Surrey

What this site is not

  • Not a party, and not for one.Councillors and MPs of every party are on it. The only test is the motion.
  • Not a charity, a company or a campaign group. There is no bank account, no donations and nothing to donate to.
  • Not funded.Nobody pays for it but the person who made it, and nobody has been asked to.
  • Not run by, or for, any Jewish communal organisation. Many have been told it exists and asked to share it. None has a say in it.
  • Not a tracker.Visitors are not identified or followed. The only records it keeps are of councillors and MPs who sign in, which is how their names get on it. What the site records.
  • Not a place where anyone is quoted out of context.A councillor or MP who writes that Zionism is racism is recorded in their own words, with the date.

Beyond one email

One email takes two minutes. With ten, there is more you can do.

  • Share your council's page

Every council has a page: each councillor, their party, and where each stands. Find yours and send it round.

    Find your council
  • Ask in person

Councillors hold surgeries, and councils take questions from the public. Take this one with you: do you think Zionism is racism? The short answers are on one page.

    Questions and answers
  • Tell a local journalist

The press page has the numbers, the names and the story so far, and keeps itself up to date. Forward it to your local paper or radio station.

    The press page
  • Write to your MP

Type your postcode and one email goes to your MP and every councillor who represents you, from your own email address.

    Ask your MP and councillors

Write to me

Write about a correction, a councillor's words, a story you are working on, or how to help: hello@zionismisnotracism.co.uk. You will hear back from one person, not an office.

You will never hear from me about money. There is nothing to give to, and I will never ask.

Corrections and right of reply

Anyone who has put their name to the campaign on this site can change their words, or take their name off, by writing from the email address their council or Parliament publishes for them, and it is done the same day. A councillor or MP recorded as saying that Zionism is racism is quoted in their own words, with the date: the record is theirs, and it stays.

Any error of fact, a wrong ward, a wrong party, a name misspelt, is corrected as soon as it is pointed out, and the correction is dated. Point one out.
